Pass-a-Grille neighborhood lies at the southern tip of St Pete Beach. Inhabited by native Americans until it was first described by the Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. Later used by French fisherman, the area was first opened to tourists in 1857. The first hotel was built on Pass-a-Grille in 1901 and the area was annexed into the City of St. Pete Beach in 1957; later becoming a National Register Historic District in 1989.
Today, Pass-a-Grille retains much of its early 20th-century charm. Small guest houses and restaurants line the west across from the sea oats that grow along the beach. This area of the beach offers metered parking directly along the beach along with a snack bar and showers to rinse off after a swim in the Gulf. The wide, white sandy beach, shops, ice cream, outdoor art market, restaurants, tennis courts, basketball courts, and fishing piers are all located within a short walking distance walking distance. Pass-a-Grille Park, a public park, is also located in the neighborhood. This small, historic neighborhood has many small and mid-size historic St Pete Beach homes as well as grand mansions.
